Jewelery information
ALTI’s jewelry is made entirely of silver. We work with both “regular” sterling silver (925/1000) and so-called “fine silver” (999/1000). The jewelery stays beautiful for a long time and you polish it with silver polish. You should remember not to store them together so they rub against each other because silver is quite soft and scratches easily. If you take care of your silver jewelry, it will last very well.
A few tips to keep your jewelery beautiful for as long as possible:
- Never use the jewelery in case of a lot of contact with water, e.g. sink, bath, shower and laundry.
- Do not store your jewelery in e.g. bathrooms where it is damp as they can discolor.
- Keep in mind that your jewelry does not like skin lotion, perfume, hairspray or other chemicals.
- Store your jewelry separately from each other so they don’t get tangled and scratched.
Common questions:
Why has my jewelry become discolored?
Wherever sulfur is present, silver can become discolored and black. It is said that the silver oxidizes. This is not entirely true as the oxidation is actually sulphidation, i.e. a process where sulfur combines and forms a chemical compound with silver – silver sulphide which forms a thin black film on the silver surface. Sulfur is found almost everywhere: in the air, on the skin (some medicines can affect it), on painted surfaces, in fabrics, plastics, cigarette smoke, fossil fuels and rubber bands and more. Some people have a chemical imbalance in the body from, for example, medications or strong stress, which causes silver to turn black more easily. The oxidation can be polished off with a silver polishing cloth (ALTI has its own ones for sale in the webshop) which contain a polishing agent that protects the newly polished surface and delays the appearance of new blackening. The jewelry stays finer the more you use it.
Why has my jewelery become scratched?
Since silver is a relatively soft metal, the material is easily scratched when it meets harder materials or other silver. If you have a piece of jewelry with several name tags or charms that lie against each other, friction occurs, which results in small scratches in the silver. These small scratches eventually cover the entire surface and you no longer perceive the silver as scratchy, instead you usually say that the silver has acquired a nice patina. It’s fine to get in touch if you need help polishing it.
How do I measure the size if I want to order a ring?
A tip when measuring yourself is to take a ring that fits and measure the diameter, i.e. the inside measurement from edge to edge right through the ring. If you are going to order a wide ring, tell us whether you have measured a narrow or a wide ring. A wide ring needs to be bigger because it “sucks”. Otherwise, you can measure at a goldsmith’s and then with a straight ring gauge – not with a cupped inside. Specify the scale measured by the goldsmith or shop staff when you place your order with ALTI.
